Western-World Baby Boomers had it Made

Born in the prosperous years of elevated fertility following the Second World War we frisked our way through the following decades. Discarding mouldy old harnesses, we burnt our bras and fought for women's rights and equality in the workplace. For the first time in history we could experiment with sex without the risk of pregnancy.

We married young and had children in our 20s. Our families were smaller than those of our mothers and grandmothers. We went out to work in droves. By the 1980s we were getting divorced faster than any other generation.

Now, we're living longer than previous generations, as are our parents. Look around next time you're out shopping. See two elderly women together? Chances are they're not two old friends out on the town, but mother and daughter harnessed together by the complexities of devotion, duty and dependency.
